Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is embroiled in a candidate dilemma in Mzimba Hora Constituency after two of its members presented parliamentary nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

The candidates are former member of Parliament (MP) Henry Mumba and incumbent MP Christopher Ngwira’s wife, Martha Munthali.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa confirmed the development.

“Both nomination papers were duly stamped by the party. The matter is being handled by our legal team.  The nation will be informed on the way forward,” he said.

Some structures in the party chose Munthali after the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal maintained a bankruptcy order against Ngwira.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, Ngwira said constituents wanted someone close to him to emulate his kind of leadership.

Mumba could not grant an interview as he was driving and he asked for more time. However, his phone was later out of reach.

Earlier this week, MEC rejected DPP’s request to withdraw Mumba’s candidature.
